What is Benzac AC?
Benzac AC is an effective benzoyl peroxide based treatment for mild to moderate acne.
The active ingredient in Benzac AC, benzoyl peroxide helps unblock pores and kills acne bacteria within 48 hours.
What strength Benzac AC Gel
There are 3 strengths of Benzac AC Gel. 2.5%, 5% and 10%. The percentage refers to the amount of the active benzoyl peroxide in the gel.
It is recommended that you always begin treatment with either 2.5% or 5% Benzac AC. If your acne persists, and provided your skin tolerates the lower strength gel, your doctor or pharmacist may recommend continued treatment with the higher strength gel (10%).
How long you will need to use Benzac AC will depend on how quickly your condition improves. After you have used it for one month, you should see your doctor or pharmacist again so they can check the improvement in your condition.

Each gram contains:
Active: benzoyl peroxide 100mg/g
Inactive: docusate sodium, disodium edetate, poloxamer 182, carbomer 940, propylene glycol, acrylates copolymer, glycerol (glycerine), silicon dioxide, sodium hydroxide, and purified water.
Dosage:
Make sure you read the enclosed leaflet first.
Step 1
Wash the affected area with a mild skin cleanser and water and pat skin dry.
Step 2
Apply a thin film of Benzac AC Gel to the affected areas once daily, leaving on the skin for 2 hours then washing it off with water then pat skin dry.
Step 3
Apply a light moisturiser which won’t clog pores. After three days, if no discomfort is felt, apply Benzac AC Gel in the evening and leave it on all night.
After 7 days,if there is no redness or peeling and your skin is still not improving, apply Benzac AC Gel twice a day, morning and night. How long you will need to use Benzac AC Gel will depend on how quickly your condition improves.
After a month,you should see your doctor or pharmacist again so they can asses the condition of your skin.

While you are using BENZAC AC GEL
Things you must not do:
Do not apply to eyes, lips, mouth or sensitive areas of the neck. If accidental contact occurs rinse with water and pat dry. Contact may cause irritation.
Avoid excessive exposure to sunlight or other sources of ultra-violet light.
- Do not use harsh skin cleansers or scrubs.
- Do not use cosmetic products that contain alcohol.
- Do not use medicated soaps.
These things may have an extra drying or irritant effect.
Things to be careful of:
Keep cosmetic use to a minimum and avoid oil based cosmetics which can clog the pores. Be careful when using BENZAC gel because benzoyl peroxide can bleach or discolour clothing or towels.
Side effects
If excessive swelling, irritation, redness or peeling occurs discontinue use. If it persists consult your doctor

What’s this ‘AC’ all about?
Benzac AC removes excess oil and hydrates your skin. It does this by using advanced Acrylates Copolymer (AC)/ glycerin complex.
Sounds all sciency and stuff we know, but basically Acrylates Copolymers are tiny highly porous beads. These beads are so porous that they can absorb up to four times their own weight in fluid.
Acrylates Copolymer beads soak up certain liquids quickly and easily, but they are selective about what they can absorb. They rapidly absorb oils, however, they can’t absorb water, as water has a very high surface tension.
The other ingredient that works with AC, is glycerin. Glycerin lubricates the skin, making it smooth and soft. So whilst the Acrylates Copolymers (AC) absorb the excess oil that can carry bacteria, the glycerin helps hydrate the skin.
So what does this mean for acne?
When Acrylates Copolymer/glycerin complex is applied to the face, the beads come in contact with lipids, such as sebum, that have a high affinity for them. Sebum, because of its attraction to the beads, forces the glycerin out of the beads and onto the skin surface. The AC beads then absorb the sebum.

What Benzoyl peroxide is used for:
- Benzoyl peroxide is used for the treatment of acne.
- It works by unplugging blackheads and whiteheads (blocked pores) and killing the bacteria present on the skin that is causing the acne.
- This product also has acrylates copolymer beads which are responsible for absorbing excess oils and producing glycerol thus decreasing skin irritation.
Do not use Benzoyl peroxide:
- If you have an allergy to benzoyl peroxide or any of the ingredients present in this product.
- If the package is ripped or has signs of tampering.
- If you are pregnant or planning on getting pregnant or breastfeeding.
- If the expiry date mentioned benzac and cetaphil the medication box has passed.
Warnings & Precautions:
- Stop the medication right away and talk to your doctor or pharmacist if you develop any allergic or skin reactions to any of the ingredients present in this gel such as skin itchiness, skin redness, shortness of breath, skin rash, swelling of the face or neck, decreased blood pressure and dizziness.
- This medicine is designed for external topical use only. Do not swallow this product.
- Avoid contact of the gel with your lips, eyes, mouth, sensitive areas of the neck and angles of the nose in order to avoid irritation.
- In case of accidental contact, make sure to rinse the area very well with warm water and then pat dry.
- Do not apply this product to damaged skin.
- Do not use other acne medications to avoid excessive dryness or skin irritation, unless recommended by your doctor or pharmacist.
- Avoid being excessively exposed to sunlight and other UV light sources.
- Make sure to apply a non-greasy, broad spectrum, high SPF sunscreen if you will be exposed to sunlight or other UV light sources.
- Limit the use of cosmetics to a minimum and make sure to avoid using oil-based cosmetics in order to prevent clogging of your skin pores.
- Benzoyl peroxide may discolor or bleach (whiten) towels, clothing and bed linen.
- Make sure to avoid their contact of with the gel.
- You are more likely to experience skin irritation when using benzoyl peroxide if your skin is fair.
- Make sure not to use harsh scrubs, skin cleansers, medicated soaps or cosmetic products that contain alcohol in order to prevent excessive dryness or skin irritation.
- This product contains propylene glycol which may increase the risk of skin irritation.
Possible Side Effects:
- Although it may be rare, some patients may experience serious side effects when using a medication.
- Stop using this product and contact your healthcare provider if you experience any allergic skin reactions,
- like rash, itching, red, swollen, blistered, or peeling skin or if you experience increased redness or pain of the wound area.
- Skin irritation is more likely to occur if the gel is used more than recommended.
- Common side effects that may happen during the first weeks of starting this product skin tension, skin stinging or burning, itching, mild peeling and skin redness.
- These side effects usually happen during the first weeks of treatment and are usually mild and considered normal.
- You can use a skin moisturizer for the relief of these side effects.
- You may also apply the gel once a day (if you have been applying it twice a day) or once every 2 days in order to reduce the occurrence of these side effects.
- If you experience severe skin irritation, swelling, peeling or redness, make sure to stop using this medicine.
- If your signs persist even after stopping the use of this medicine, talk to your doctor for advice.
Other medicines and Benzoyl peroxide:
- Tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are taking, have recently taken or might take any other medications including topical products.
How to use Benzoyl peroxide:
- It is recommended that you always start your therapy with this medicine using the 2.5% or 5% concentration of this product in order to make sure that your skin becomes gradually tolerant to the product and experiences less side effects.
- If your skin is tolerant to the 2.5% or 5% concentration, your doctor or pharmacist may recommend a higher concentration of 10%.
- Make sure to apply this product on the acne affected areas (spot treatment) only.
- Wash your hands before and after using the gel.
- Start by washing and drying your hands before you apply the gel.
- Then wash the acne affected area using water and a mild skin cleanser followed by patting the skin dry.
- Afterwards, apply a thin layer of benzoyl peroxide to the affected areas once daily,
- making sure to keep the gel on your skin for 2 hours, then wash off the gel with water and make sure to pat skin dry.
- Finally, it is recommended that you apply a light moisturizer that suits your skin and does not cause pores clogging in order to keep your skin hydrated.
- If you do not experience skin discomfort after 3 days of starting this product, apply benzoyl peroxide in the evening and leave it on the affected area all night.
- If you do not experience skin peeling or redness and your affected area is still not improving after 7 days of using this product, apply benzoyl peroxide twice a day (morning and night).
- Make sure to replace the cap on the tube after using the gel in order to avoid leakage of the medicine.
- The duration of therapy depends on how fast your skin responds to the product.
- Acne may take time to start improving, therefore be patient with your treatment.
- After one month of starting this medicine, make sure to visit your doctor or pharmacist for check-up.
- Make sure to follow the directions mentioned on this leaflet unless recommended differently by your doctor or pharmacist.
How to store Benzoyl peroxide:
- Keep out of the reach of children and pets (e.g. in a locked cupboard at least 1.5 meters above the floor)
- Store in a dry place below 25°C
- Do not use beyond the expiry date mentioned on the gel
- Keep medication in its original pack to protect it from moisture and light
- Do not dispose medication in the wastewater or household waste
